Brazil grabs the spotlight!

This is The Sports Reset for Thursday, June 25th.

In World Cup soccer, Brazil beat Scotland 3 to 0, with Vinicius Junior scoring twice, Neymar returning off the bench, and Brazil winning Group C. Switzerland beat Canada 2 to 1 to take Group B, while Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Qatar 3 to 1 and moved close to a first-ever World Cup knockout appearance. South Africa beat South Korea 1 to 0 to reach the knockouts for the first time, and Mexico handled Czechia 3 to 0 to finish a perfect group stage.

In the WNBA, the Phoenix Mercury edged the Indiana Fever 111 to 109, but the bigger story was Caitlin Clark leaving with a back injury after another physical game. In MLB, the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 10 to 5 in the doubleheader nightcap, helped by six Mets infield errors on a rough night at Citi Field.

Looking ahead, the World Cup spotlight shifts to the United States against Türkiye at SoFi Stadium, where the United States has already locked up Group D and can manage minutes before a likely July 1 knockout match. Australia also gets Paraguay with advancement still in play. Germany faces Ecuador at MetLife Stadium, while Ivory Coast meets Curaçao in Philadelphia, with both still tied to the Group E picture. Japan against Sweden in Dallas is the matchup to watch in Group F because Japan can advance with a draw, while Sweden needs a sharper response after its last result.

In MLB, New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox brings the rivalry back to Fenway Park, and Chicago Cubs at New York Mets gives New York an immediate chance to clean up yesterday’s defensive mess. In the WNBA, Los Angeles Sparks visit Toronto Tempo without Kelsey Plum, who is out at least four weeks.
